Other facts:

On Kiribati football is the most popular sport and the efforts of establishing the world sport goes back to the mid 1980´s when the championship was build up. So this event is always featured during the "Te Runga", that is the name of the Kiribati national games which is organised by the Kiribati Island National Olympic Committee. The popularity of football is shown by the fact, that even remote islands from the Kiribati island chain like the Makin Atoll participate in the football competition. They even won the 2010 championship against the island of Marakei. The Kiribati FA also showed interest in participating in the football competition at the 2007 South Pacific Games. But they didn´t show up. In 2007 the Kiribati FA made an formal process of application for FIFA membership. Then in 2010 their case was even discussed but delayed because some documents were missing.

They made their return in 2011 edition of the Pacific Games. Although they lost all their  four games they managed to score two goals against Papua New Guinea and even against 2012 OFC Nations Cup winner Tahiti. In 2012 Scotsman Kevin McGeskin was announced as the head coach of the national teams. His target is to get Kiribati closer to FIFA membership soon.
